New turning grades for Cast Iron and Cast Stainless Steel

Mitsubishi Materials has expanded its comprehensive range of premium insert grades for turning. BC5110 is a specially coated CBN specifically for machining grey cast irons such as GG25 and GG30. Whereas the MH515 grade is a CVD coated carbide grade designed for cast austenitic stainless steels as well as ductile cast iron.

The new BC5110 delivers a variety of performance and benefits by drawing on the vast R&D work built up over years of producing other high performance CBN grades. This work has created a composition of a fine grain, high CBN content substrate that greatly improves chipping resistance. This results in process reliability and longer tool life. Meanwhile, the hard ceramic coating layer adds to the user benefits by providing wear and notching resistance to help machine excellent component surface finishes.

Service Provider Relies on 3D Laser Scanning

TÜV AUSTRIA AUTOMOTIVE GMBH  had already used handheld devices in the past to measure the brake lining contours on a vehicle. However, these devices could only be attached directly to the vehicle by using various adapters.

Their challenge was to find a 3D measuring system, which was not only affordable but also helped the company extend its state-of-the-art inspection services in the future. After three years of evaluating various measuring systems and after TÜV AUSTRIA AUTOMOTIVE had provided an overview of the measurement technology available on the market, HandySCAN 3D, the portable 3D scanner from Creaform, was ultimately chosen.

Reliable and Reputable Supply Chain

Driven by quality, innovation and continuous improvement, Sulzer witnessed indifferent levels of support from its previous integrator of consumable products and made the bold move to change its supplier during the pandemic.

It was only a matter of weeks from signing the supply chain contract before MSC were identifying hundreds of thousands of pounds of potential savings for Sulzer. The short timescale for potential savings would be considered a major coup for any supplier – the fact that MSC identified the savings ‘virtually’ during the lockdown is a genuine testament to the service that sets MSC apart from its competitors.

Increasing Focus on Digital Manufacturing Solutions

Sweden’s Sandvik AB is reorganising its tool business to further strengthen its position within future digital solutions, also known as Industry 4.0, explains Stefan Widing, CEO of Sandvik.

According to Widing, the smart factory is the heart of Industry 4.0., therefore Sandvik is carrying out a reorganisation with the aim of expanding digital technology to help make customers more productive and sustainable. With this in mind, Sandvik Machining Solutions, the business area for metal-cutting processing, has changed its name to Sandvik Manufacturing and Machining Solutions, and has been divided into two separate business area segments: Sandvik Machining Solutions and Sandvik Manufacturing Solutions.
